Fast foundations
Sometimes the first AI win is getting the basics sorted properly: brand, website, email, customer comms and simple automation that makes the business look credible from day one.
Logo, colours, messaging and a professional presence that doesn’t look like it was assembled in a panic.
A clean web presence, domain setup and proper business email so customers know where to find you.
Contact forms, booking links, enquiry replies and follow-up workflows so opportunities don’t disappear.
AI chatbots, content systems and admin helpers built around how you actually work, not how software vendors wish you worked.
In many cases, the foundations of a new or refreshed business can be set up within a couple of days: credible brand, working website, business email, booking route and first AI-assisted workflows.
What we fix
That might be customer replies, quote follow-ups, meeting notes, review responses, social posts, reporting, document drafting or the admin that quietly eats half your week.
Blog posts, social captions, proposals, case studies, simple videos and branded materials without staring at a blank page.
Enquiry responses, review management, FAQs, booking messages and customer follow-ups that feel personal, not robotic.
Meeting summaries, document drafts, email sorting, invoice handling, scheduling nudges and repeatable workflows.
Customer feedback, simple dashboards, competitor scans, trend reports and plain-English summaries that help decisions.
The point
Most business owners don’t have time to test 14 AI tools after dinner. That’s the bit Barely Artificial does.
We start with the problem, not the technology. If a spreadsheet and a decent template solve it, we’ll say so.
The aim is simple: leave you capable and confident, not dependent on a consultant forever.
How it works
Every engagement starts with a free discovery session. From there, the work is scoped clearly before anything paid begins.
Free structured consultation. We find the useful opportunities and ignore the shiny nonsense.
One specific problem, scoped and solved for a fixed price. Clean, contained, useful.
Larger workflow setup, training and documentation, delivered to an agreed ceiling.
Ongoing advice for businesses that want a known AI specialist on call.
Good. That’s what discovery is for.
Support, training and adoption
AI projects fail when the tool gets delivered and the humans get forgotten. Barely Artificial keeps adoption at the centre from day one.
You get practical notes, simple instructions and enough context to understand what has been built and why.
Training is built around real work, not abstract AI demos. Your team learns the workflows they’ll actually use.
We design around confidence, habits and sensible guardrails, so AI becomes part of the working day rather than another forgotten tool.
Who it helps
Barely Artificial works with SMEs across the East Midlands, with a long-term focus on hospitality.
Restaurants, pubs, B&Bs, hotels and event venues drowning in reviews, bookings, social posts and rota chaos.
Accountants, consultants and service firms that create too many documents and lose too much time to admin.
Trades, studios, clubs and local operators that need faster quoting, follow-up and customer communication.
About Paul
Barely Artificial is run by Paul O’Brien, a Nottingham-based consultant with more than 20 years’ experience in project management and technical delivery.
His background spans broadcast, IP video and media technology, with clients including Disney, international broadcasters, healthcare providers and financial services firms.
Before launching Barely Artificial, Paul led practical AI adoption inside an operations group, building tools that supported real customer intelligence, project review and production workflows.
That matters. This isn’t theory dressed up as consultancy. It’s delivery experience applied to the AI tools SMEs can actually use.
Proof point
The brand, documents, service model, content plan and website were built using AI as a working partner, with Paul shaping, checking and improving the output.
That’s the model: AI handles the heavy lifting. A human keeps it honest, useful and fit for purpose.
Questions worth asking
No. A healthy scepticism is often more useful than enthusiasm. We’ll start with the work you already do and find where AI might help.
That’s not the aim. Most SME use cases are about reducing repetitive work, improving consistency and giving people time back.
It depends on the job. Common options include ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Canva, Zapier, Make, Notion, HeyGen and ElevenLabs. Tools change quickly, so recommendations are checked against the current need.
Sometimes, but it needs care. We’ll agree what can and can’t go into AI tools before anything sensitive is used. For personal data or confidential material, the setup matters.
That’s common. Usually the problem wasn’t AI. It was a vague prompt, the wrong tool, poor process design or no handover. We fix the workflow, not just the wording.
Yes. A working AI setup is only useful if people know when to use it, when not to use it and how to check the output. Training, documentation and handover are built into implementation work so the new workflow actually sticks.
AI has environmental costs, and we don’t pretend otherwise. Barely Artificial is a green-minded business: we use public transport where practical, drive an EV when we need to travel, choose suppliers carefully, and favour lower-impact options where we can. We also recommend AI where it has a clear business purpose, not as a novelty. Less waste. Better judgement. Human in the loop.
Discovery is free. Quick Win projects are fixed price after scope. Larger implementation work is delivered to an agreed ceiling. You’ll know the cost before paid work starts.
